Help us set up the charity “We The Village”

“We the Village” – Supporting people in the LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer) community and their loved ones.

Hi my name is Adele and my partner is Monique, we would like to invite you to learn more about a very special village. Welcome to “We The Village”. This village saves lives. This village connects hearts and minds.  This villages provides support, connection and compassion to people in the LGBTIQ community and their loves ones.  You may not even know yet that you are a member of this village – every person is a member.  This is an international campaign.  You can help to provide safety, support and compassion.

It is what we need.

Why do we need your help?

With the rate of depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide attempts so much higher for those in the LGBTIQ community than their heterosexual peers, we need to provide resources that support them and their loves ones.  Including ways for everyone to understand that they are not alone, and that we are here to learn, understand, and support as we figure it all out.

Mental Health issues in the lesbian and gay community alone have the following statistics.

·                     8 times more likely to have tried to commit suicide.

·                     6 times more likely to report high levels of depression.

Our motivation came from a young man who told his parents he was gay at the age of 7.  While his parents were very supportive, they still faced challenges navigating the world around them.  Our youth are coming out and questioning their sexuality at younger ages than we are sometimes ready for. We’re starting to realize that even young children can have a firm grasp on their true gender, even if it doesn’t match with external gender features at ages as young as 4 and 5 years old.

The need is now.

We are seeking your support through this Crowd Funded initiative to create a much needed online space to connect and support LGBTIQ families and loved ones with other community members.  We see the great need for support, connection and resources.  It will all be here at We The Village.

This project is dedicated to that young man and his family who showed us we need to start conversations, and connect community to save lives.

We the Village is for everyone…whoever you are…whatever your sexuality.  Our mission is to create happy, healthy children, adults, and communities and to provide the support, resources and connection to make this happen.

My Story:

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to read about my crowdfund project. I am here to tell my story, and the story of many, many others just like me. It is because of their experiences, as well as my own, that I have completed an e-book to detail some of these experiences, and how we can grow and learn from them.

Growing up, my family and friends were the most important part of my life. They have always been, and always will be, my shelter in the storm…a place of safety where I can be free to be myself. However, when I came out to my loved ones as a lesbian at the age of 27, I discovered that these seemingly unbreakable ties were going to be sorely tested. While we came to an understanding about who I still was, and how my life had changed, we realized that there was little in our world that prepared us for this journey.  Over the past 18 years, I have come to finally grasp the depth of the impact on my own family.  Watching many others, I see the challenges, the pain, the lack of understanding and the desperate need for connection and support.

Over these 18 years I have worked hard as an activist to make a difference to the world.  Through this however it has become clearer and clearer that a key component has been overlooked and it is that change needs to be through connection and finding a shared vision.  We need to focus on developing understanding, trust and connection. Through this we can truly save lives, mend relationships, improve mental health and help those in need navigate their way as they face lives’ challenges.

We The Village — Supporting people in the LGBTIQ community and their loved ones.

In the past, there were few resources available to individuals coming out to their families and trying to find their way in society. Today however in Australia and the US we have fantastic support services and groups such as PFLAG, FFLAG in the UK and various similar associations in other countries across the world.  However, what we need and what we don’t have is a suite of combined resources which focusses on the various members of the village.  i.e. On and offline resources which provide professional support, moderated peer to peer support, up to date resources for individuals, families, loved ones and groups such as schools and sporting groups.  We The Village is the answer.

Why Do We Need Your Help?

Monique and I have the vision, the passion and the intention.  We need your help to make this a reality.

We already have one excellent resource. An Ebook. There are very few resources for parents who have younger children who identify as gay or transgender.    This book is to help us, help our children and other children in our lives. This is just the beginning.  We have big plans for so much more!

What We Need:

Funding towards helping We The Village reach our goals:

·         First and foremost the establishment of a not-for-profit business

·         The development of a secure website including private communication options (forums and private messaging) and anonymity as desired by users

·         A  secure online portal for message support, Q&As, and specific forums for communicating within the groups outlined above

·         The collation of existing research papers and resources to be made available to users

·         24 hour moderation of the website to ensure safety of users

·         Publishing of books (e-books and hardcopy)

·         Start a podcast

To thank you, our generous donors, we would love to acknowledge you as founding donors on the website to thank you for helping us kick start this much needed charity.
